Homeschool For Cheap

The websites I use to keep my homeschooling costs down!

I have been homeschooling my two fourth graders since August. It has been an adventure that makes me both smile and cry. But it has been a pretty cheap adventure.

I knew what the expectations for 4th grade learning in my state before I planned because I got them from the Dept of Education website. I immediately started looking for resources that I could use to teach the kids. I found several Facebook pages that offered so much help and guidance; I want to share some of my free resources with you in case you are homeschooling or thinking about homeschooling.

teacherspayteachers.com- there are free downloads which vary in usefulness. There are also plenty of items you could pay for.

123homeschool4me.com- more free worksheets

allinonehomeschool.com- free curriculum

typing.com- a free resource to teach students to type

turtlediary.com- there are plenty of educational games and assessment tests available for free with ads; there are memberships available to make the games ad free.

Pinterest- there are a lot of blogs that have great hands on learning ideas or experiments. I love doing anything that makes learning more fun!

funbrain.com- has both free content and things that need to be paid for. I do like the reading selection that they have.

Prodigy- this is a math website that again has both parts that are free and parts that need to be paid for. My kids want me to pay for the membership because they can’t play some of the games all the way through.

spellingtraining.com- pretty self explanatory. We are going to start using this one more. My kids spelling is pretty atrocious.

readtheory.com- they help improve reading comprehension

YouTube, Netflix, Prime and Disney+ have plenty of documentaries and videos for visual learning.

Amazon actually has learning material you can purchase and download. They are pretty reasonably priced AND they go on sale occasionally. These are some of the items I purchased from Amazon and I really enjoy them, I did get them on sale… I think 50%-75% off, so keep an eye out on them!!

The product links below are affiliate links, if you make a purchase from the link I get a small portion of the sale.

NaNoWriMo Part 1 – How I’m planning my novel with World Anvil!!!

As we prepare for NanoWriMo, I am talking about what resource I use to plan out a fantasy novel.

So I have never completed a NaNoWriMo in its entirety, one the hardest struggles has been running out of ideas and direction.

I have found the easiest thing for me is planning out what I want to write about.

I found a platform that I use which makes planning things easier and it has so many functions from character/world building to options for writing in the platform and it’s even something where you can use it for fantasy table top role playing games (ex. D&D).

World Anvil has been a huge help with world building and allowing me to write things and connect them to each other (I’m not getting paid anything to promote them). You can have various categories/sub categories/articles and each of these allow you to further break them down into various sub sections. For someone like me whose writing a fantasy novel this is like God’s gift to earth!

These are the various articles you can have and they can be connected into a ton of different things including who might run a country, where these buildings are and so many other things.

Here’s the kicker it even has a built in manuscript section that works just like Microsoft Word and since it’s all built into the system you can literally tab between writing, to your character articles and then back to writing all over again. This is extremely robust and it makes writing so much easier because it’s all in one place.

The last thing about this that makes it so appealing is you can also upload files/images/roleplay. This is just as awesome for fantasy world building as well especially regarding table top RPG’s. It really is perfect for planning and all around great for making sure you can build something and allow yourself to plan out what and how you’re going to do this.

So if you want to check it out it’s pretty cool and pretty exciting to use. I plan on using this all through NaNoWriMo and again me and the majestic wife will be on twitch streaming as we write and talking about what we’re writing about. We hope you’ll join us and come hang out when we start writing in November! The channel is here.
