Zelda Party

My oldest turned 11 recently and a Zelda party was requested. So Mom delivered!

I rotate birthday parties between the years to help save me money, this year was the “off” year for my oldest. That means less money is spent on decor and we don’t have a lot of people over.

So to save additional money on costs I try to use things I already have at home and I DIY A LOT of stuff.

This is the main decor wall for the party, all this is is crepe paper (streamers) and construction paper cut into the Birthday banner. It made a huge statement and covered up my art which my son doesn’t care for.

The cake

I wasn’t planning on this DIY…. I use Publix for my cake, I ALWAYS use Publix because their cakes are DELICIOUS!!! Also, they do such an amazing job with their decorations. They let me down though and I had to improvise. This is a vanilla cake with icing I dyed green. The design is a Hylian shield. I cut out the inside myself with a razor blade. I placed the paper on the iced cake and I used black decorating icing to “color” in the design. The outside of the shield is just paper, it was my simple solution. It looked amazing and my bday kid was very happy!

I always have the kids do crafts or play games at the parties, it helps entertain them and it gives them something to take home. For the Zelda party I choose to have the kids paint stained glass pictures. They turned out really well!!

I used 8×10 dollar store frames and took them apart for their glass. It made a bit of a mess and I regret not keeping the frames to hang the glass up.

I found an image easy enough to trace with puffy paint

Either will work
I made a total of 5

To make the paint that dries semi clear just take acrylic paint and add school glue. The kids really enjoyed painting them and they were a really easy and cheap craft!! Because I had most of the supplies I spent $10 on 5 of them; 5 for the frames and 5 for the puffy paint.

Budget Farmhouse Crafts

Farmhouse decor is an extremely popular design style right now! My friend just bought her first house (by herself *whoop whoop*) and she wants to decorate in the farmhouse style. She is on a budget, like so many of us, so I told her that I would make her some cheap decor.

I went through Amazon for inspiration and then hit my favorite place for Budget DIYs…. the dollar store!!

I included the links to the actual Amazon items in case you wanted to see them, they are affiliate links if you make a purchase I get a small percentage of it.

Some of my supplies
My version

I took 3 small identical books and painted them white. Inserting to say I DID NOT use the dollar store paint…. it is TERRIBLE. I used regular white acrylic paint from Walmart $.50. I hot glued them together after painting them and then I wrapped them in twine (3 for a dollar and I barely used 1). I wrote the words myself with a permanent marker and then to make them look worn I covered the words with chalk marker. My books cost less than $5 total and did not take very long to make. The inspiration is $34.99 which is so much more than mine, but it is also made of wood, not books.

These arrows are a dollar a piece and I used the same acrylic paint and permanent marker with a stencil

I tried to use a paint pen instead of permanent marker… failed miserably

I strung them together with the same twine. Again this project was less than $5 all together. This inspiration piece is about $22, if I were to redo this one I would use my Silhouette to cut out the words versus a stencil. You could also use more than one color; I was trying to make the colors basic so they would match any décor.

Vase for a simple statement

This is a vase wrapped in a roll of the twine, I have floral foam and 2 sprigs of grass. I hot glued the twine at the bottom and just wrapped very tightly and then glued the twine at the top. Total cost $5, maybe $5.50.

These vases I failed to get a picture of before I gave them to my friend, so I apologize for the color of my photo. These are all dollar store vases and I painted them with the same acrylic paint. I did several layers of just white and then I streaked some black paint. I sanded the vases down, concentrating on the areas with the black paint to give them a worn look. With using the same paint as the other projects the total cost for this project would be about $3.25. The inspiration piece is almost $35!! That is a huge savings and I think they look really great.

Beach Crafts

I have posted several times about my love for the beach and I wanted to bring it home. So I decided on the downstairs bathroom being beach themed.

I am going to be honest with you, for the first year and a half of living here my “beach theme” beach was void of any actual beach items. I have been trying to slowly decorate our house more and make it more home-y feeling so I decided to concentrate on one of the smaller rooms.

My first move was to search for beach décor on Amazon because… I have a problem, lol. I found some cute stuff, but I felt some of it was over priced so I decided to try a dollar store copycat craft!

And this is what I have made!

Pretty good copycat!

So here is how I did it!

I took 3 5×7 photo frames from the dollar store and I painted them with some acrylic paint and I wiped off some to give them a distressed look. I look rope that I got from Walmart for under $6 (but the dollar store rope is cheaper) and I hot glued them together. My frame is slightly longer but I like it!! My piece is also over $20 cheaper, so I am pretty happy with myself.

What I did

These were Super simple statement pieces. I bought 2 vases and one mason jar from the dollar store. I used the rope from the last craft and hot glue to create the effect. I used sand from the actual beach but you can buy sand, sea glass, shells and the tumbleweeds at the beach. Total cost was about $6.

Inspiration
Actual pieces

I got the canvases from the dollar store. Painted them with a coat of bronze paint and then a layer of teal. I sanded them to give them a worn/distressed look. The “coral” is actually a vase filler I have had lying around for years and the shells were both store bought and found on the beach. The starfish was the most expensive item at $4, I got that from Walmart. Hobby Lobby has a 3 pack for $4 and you can use your 40% off coupon BUT they are much smaller and I wanted a big one. Altogether these were probably around $10. They do hang on the wall but I wanted a picture of them close together.

Inspiration
What I did!

I bought 8×10 frames from the dollar store and used the same spool of rope, hot glue and shells from the previous crafts. This turned out super cute but kind of pointless because who needs 8×10 pictures in the bathroom??? Lol. I will probably use my silhouette to make a design or….

I could make something like this again

So these are my beach crafts, I hope you like them! If you have any questions or have any other dollar store crafts you like comment below!!

We’re in the End Game

Yes, yes we are

Halloween has passed, which means it’s Christmas time!! Lol, I kid… sort of

Me

This past week did not go the way I wanted at all. I have sciatica and this past week it flared up for 5 days so for 5 days I could barely move without being in extreme pain. So any and all plans I had fell through.

Well almost every plan. I had to make my daughter’s Halloween costume and like a true procrastinator I waited until the week before to even start. She wanted to be Harley Quinn and at first I vetoed that idea because she is only 9 and Harley costumes tend to be sexy but I came around to the idea if I could make the costume myself.

Grabbed these from Amazon

I tried dying them with Rit and that did not work well AT ALL. So I decided to paint the clothes with acrylic paint and that worked surprisingly well!

I have decided that I won’t be putting my kids face’s on here anymore. People can download your pictures right off your blog… I didn’t know that.

I also did 3 mock classes for VIPKIDS, still trying to get approved to teach. I am not happy that I haven’t passed yet. But I’m hoping that it will all be worth it! I am excited to have a job again and financially contribute to the household. My next mock class is tomorrow night so happy thought would be appreciated.

Halloween was pretty amazing, our neighborhood went all out this year. The kids got 3 giant bowls of candy!

Just a random pic of my 2 biggest

The kids are learning about Native American history this month. I am pretty excited for the crafts I have planned and we will probably take another trip to the State Museum for some hands on learning.

NanoWriMo started yesterday!! Matt and I are both very excited, I got 1832 words logged day one and Matt logged in over 650. I stayed up later last night to type more.

The baby has balanitis. I spent 2 hours at urgent care yesterday to get him diagnosed. I hate when my babies are sick and this particular child does not take meds well… so this is going to be a struggle. He is on liquid antibiotics, tylenol and ibuprofen for pain/fever. He also had 2 creams that I need to apply to the infected area several times a day.

So our November is full already! I have to start taking down Halloween decorations and getting Christmas ones ready to go up.

How was everyone’s week? Do you have any exciting plans for November? When do you put up Christmas decorations??

Feeling Overwhelmed

I was supposed to do a blog post on Weds for Bonnie’s Book Club. If you were anticipating that, I apologize. I’ve been a little overwhelmed.

I have been biting off more than I can chew lately, it’s a pretty constant problem in my life. I constantly want to go go go but I put so much on my plate, then my depression kicks in so I get NOTHING done. My anxiety then let’s me know what a worthless POS I am and we go round and round.

BUT some great things are slowly happening… the kids and I got some Halloween decorations up

We got some much needed yard work done, we chopped down 5 trees and sprayed the weeds, I might need to do that again.

I have lost 6lbs!! I know that is a seemingly minor victory BUT for me it’s pretty huge.

Homeschool is going… ok… ish… there are great days and days when the kids and I scream at each other. We finally got to the library (our local is closed for renovations). The closest one we can go to is 45min away… and it is in a temporary building. But it was great to get new books!

I have done SO MANY LOADS OF LAUNDRY this week. I gave clothes away, donated some can goods.

I have been working really hard to get my life in order, but I still have SO MUCH TO DO.

That’s where I am this Friday night. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!! Got any definite plans? We have 90% chance of rain so we are staying in.

Birthday Parties Bring Out My Creative side

My son’s birthday party was last weekend, it was minecraft themed once again.

If you have kids or throw parties ever, you know they can get pricey.

I go NUTS for my kids birthday parties, growing up I always knew I would and I have.

But when you are a single mom or a household with one income sometimes things aren’t as easy to get done.

For me, that is when crafty mommy steps in.

I’ve gotten compliments on my parties so I thought I would explain my process and dish out some money saving tips.

My planning for the parties starts MONTHS in advance, so A. I can buy things as I can afford them and B. Mostly A…

I spend a lot of time on Pinterest getting ideas and taking notes, I write lists of things I need and things I need to do. I create a timeline, its intense… and literally NEVER goes to plan. But my anxiety loves the plans.

I buy supplies from Amazon, Walmart and the Dollar Tree and sometimes that is where I get my inspiration. Decorations do not have to be expensive

Those fairies are construction paper

I got branches from outside, spray painted and glittered them. I made thr fairies out of clothespins and flowers from the dollar tree. The flowers are cut up toilet paper rings stuck together. Great centerpiece and super cheap!

Black construction paper, with yellow paint pens to make the signs. Black tablecloth and star ceiling decorations from the dollar store. Kids had a blast posing in front of it for pictures!

Bandanas, when you can find them, are only $.50 at Walmart and I made the telescopes with toilet paper rolls. The kids each got one.

Minecraft

The pièce de résistance is my daughter’s Frozen party. I owe my mom everything for this party. She had the puffs in the garage and the snowflakes hanging off the ceiling are actually stickers we got clearance after Christmas. Her dress is actually a flower girl’s dress I got at a thrift store and mom dyed it and added some additional details. She also drew the Olaf free hand.

I absolutely love my kids and celebrating their birthdays! If I had a perfect career it would be Birthday party planning! But only for kids!!
